On the occasion of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Morocco highlighted his new initiative to promote and scale up sustainable agricultural practices. In fact, the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), in collaboration with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), organized a significant workshop that showcased Morocco’s pioneering experience in conservation agriculture. Conservation Agriculture: A Pillar for a Sustainable Agricultural Future…
Conservation agriculture, which relies on techniques aimed at preserving soil health, reducing water erosion, and improving agricultural productivity, has become a cornerstone of Morocco’s strategy to combat the effects of climate change. The country aims to expand this practice to cover 1 million hectares by 2030, an ambitious step that underscores Morocco’s vision for achieving sustainable agricultural development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Workshop Outcomes: Knowledge Exchange and Strengthening Collaboration…
During the workshop, participants discussed various topics, including the role of conservation agriculture in enhancing soil fertility, reducing water and energy consumption, and increasing the resilience of agricultural systems to climate variability. The Moroccan experience, which has successfully balanced agricultural productivity with natural resource conservation, was thoroughly examined. International experts commended this model, emphasizing its potential to inspire other countries in addressing food security and environmental challenges.
A Strategic Vision for the Future of Moroccan Agriculture…
This achievement aligns with Morocco’s comprehensive vision that integrates innovation with environmental commitment. Through initiatives such as the former Green Morocco Plan and the current Green Generation Strategy, Morocco seeks to drive a transition towards more sustainable and inclusive agricultural systems. Conservation agriculture represents one of the key pillars of this vision, offering innovative solutions that enhance food security and reduce the negative impacts of climate change.
Active Participation in COP29…
By actively participating in COP29, Morocco reinforces its position as a regional and international leader in sustainable agriculture. It sends a clear message to the world that transitioning to sustainable agricultural practices is not merely an option but an urgent necessity to secure a better future for coming generations.
Morocco remains committed to sharing its expertise and knowledge with other countries, particularly within theĥ Global South, to bolster collective efforts in addressing climate challenges and achieving global food security. In this sense, ICARDA highlighted that this Morocco use case was identified under CGIAR’s initiatives (Excellence in Agronomy (EiA) and Climber) as one of the main program that need to be supported and followed as this model of scaling and co-designing CA innovation with public and private partnerahip could be a successful approach a need to be extended to other countries in Africa and beyond to promote resilients agricultural practices at large scale.
