From Saudi Arabia… An Interview with Dr. Moussadek about Morocco’s Participation in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh
In the face of escalating environmental challenges, particularly land degradation, desertification, and drought, Morocco emerges as a leading example in adopting comprehensive and innovative strategies to protect its natural resources and ensure their sustainability. Morocco’s participation in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 16) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, exemplified this commitment, presenting an ambitious vision based on the latest technologies and environmental practices.
In this interview, we meet Dr.Rachid Moussadek , a distinguished researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRA) and ICARDA, as well as the Head of the Global Soil Partnership for the Near East and North Africa (FAO), one of the prominent participants in this conference. We will review with him the key aspects of Morocco’s participation, its efforts to combat desertification and drought, and its role in enhancing international cooperation to achieve sustainable development.
Dr. Moussadek , welcome to “Al-Mouhit Al-Falahi” magazine. You participated this week in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 16) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. How do you assess the importance of this event on the international level?
Thank you, Mr. Adel, for hosting me. The Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 16) is a highly significant global event, bringing together governments, experts, and decision-makers to discuss the challenges of desertification and drought that threaten food security and the sustainability of natural resources on our planet. This conference is not just about presenting problems, but also about focusing on finding practical, sustainable solutions by enhancing international cooperation and sharing experiences among countries. For us in Morocco, this conference was an exceptional opportunity to showcase our leadership in combating desertification and promoting soil sustainability, reflecting the unwavering commitment to the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God preserve him, which aims to achieve sustainable and inclusive development.
What distinguishes Morocco’s participation in this event compared to other countries?
What sets us apart is the presentation of a practical model and innovative strategies that place Morocco at the forefront of countries working to protect the environment, combat desertification, and preserve soil health. The Moroccan delegation came with an ambitious vision embodied in initiatives and strategies like “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” and the “Green Generation” initiative. During the conference, we presented advanced solutions like conservation agriculture and agroforestry, which enhance biodiversity and preserve soil fertility, in addition to drought monitoring systems using modern technology. This approach reflects our deep awareness of environmental challenges and our commitment to offering innovative solutions that other countries can benefit from.
In your opinion, what are the major challenges posed by desertification and drought on both national and international levels?
Desertification and drought are global challenges that threaten the sustainability of soil and ecosystems, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. In Morocco, we suffer from the effects of climate change and water scarcity, which puts additional pressure on agricultural lands and affects the livelihoods of people in rural areas. These challenges lead to soil degradation and reduced agricultural productivity. On the international level, these issues require collective responses and integrated solutions to enhance the sustainability of natural resources and ensure food security for future generations.
How is Morocco contributing to finding practical solutions to these challenges?
Morocco presented several practical solutions during the conference based on scientific innovation. Among these solutions is the adoption of conservation agriculture techniques that help protect the soil and increase its productivity, the development of drought-resistant plant varieties, and improving irrigation systems using modern technology. We are also working on a soil information system project in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) through the “Soil4Med” program, which provides a digital platform to support decisions related to soil and natural resource management. During the conference, my colleague Dr. Hamid Mahyou and I also presented the results of our research on monitoring agricultural and pastoral systems in Morocco.
What about international cooperation? Do you think it contributes to addressing these challenges?
International cooperation is crucial in facing environmental challenges. Morocco recognizes the importance of strengthening South-South and North-South partnerships for sharing experiences and knowledge. At the COP 16 conference, we called for increased climate financing and support for carbon credit mechanisms that help fund environmental projects. Joint initiatives like the “Soil4Med” project are a clear example of what can be achieved through international cooperation.
How do you view Morocco’s position as a leading country in combating desertification and protecting soil?
Thanks to the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco enjoys a prominent international position due to its practical efforts in combating desertification and managing natural resources. We do not just talk about it, but we translate our commitment into actions and pioneering programs. Our participation in COP 16 sent a clear message that Morocco seeks to be a model in sustainable development.
What is your message to the readers of the magazine and the international community?
My message is clear: combating desertification and protecting the environment is not just the responsibility of governments, but a shared responsibility among all members of society. Morocco provides a practical example of what can be achieved through political will and a holistic vision. I call on everyone to raise environmental awareness and work collectively to ensure a sustainable future.
