Cooperatives: A Driving Force for Transforming Agricultural and Food Systems Towards Sustainable Development in the Near East and North Africa
As part of an ambitious vision aimed at achieving sustainable development and enhancing food security, the city of Casablanca in the Kingdom of Morocco is hosting a regional joint meeting between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) from January 28 to 31, 2025. The objective of this meeting is to strengthen strategic dialogue between governments and cooperatives in the Near East and North Africa region, enabling cooperatives to transform rural, agricultural, and food systems and create a lasting, sustainable impact across the region.
The Importance of Cooperatives in Promoting Rural Development
In his opening remarks, Jawad Bahaji, Director-General of the National Agricultural Advisory Bureau, emphasized that cooperatives serve as a cornerstone for reducing social disparities and creating new economic opportunities in rural areas. He added that cooperatives, by adopting a collective approach and enhancing social inclusion, significantly contribute to the development and growth of local economies.

He stated that this initiative is a pivotal step toward empowering cooperatives to become key players in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
Cooperatives as a Catalyst for Sustainable Transformation

Inspiring Models and a Roadmap for the Future
The meeting featured presentations of successful models and innovative practices in cooperative development, providing participants with opportunities to learn from inspiring success stories. Additionally, a poster exhibition showcased innovative approaches and best practices in cooperative development, serving as a platform for networking and knowledge exchange.
Under the supervision of Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, participants conducted a field visit to several local cooperatives. This visit allowed them to witness firsthand the successful cooperative practices and engage with local leaders on the challenges and opportunities they face.
Recommendations and Roadmap
The meeting concluded with the development of a roadmap to strengthen cooperation and strategic dialogue between governments, cooperatives, and development partners. The recommendations outlined key areas for joint action, focusing on knowledge exchange, supportive policy frameworks, and fostering long-term partnerships to transform agricultural and food systems in the region.
