Conservation Agriculture in Morocco: A Field Visit to Strengthen Cooperation with the World Bank

As part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and achieve the objectives of the Green Generation strategy, the Gharb region witnessed an important field visit today, Wednesday, March 12. This visit brought together representatives of the Moroccan Association for Conservation Agriculture (AMAC), teams from the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, as well as representatives from the World Bank and other key stakeholders in the sector.

A Strategic Partnership to Support Conservation Agriculture

This visit follows a preparatory workshop held in March 2025 as part of the implementation of the Livable Planet Fund (LPF) grant. The grant aims to support the transformation of agri-food systems by promoting direct seeding as an effective solution to address climate change and ensure agricultural sustainability.

The workshop provided an opportunity to exchange expertise and coordinate efforts among various stakeholders. Participants included Mr. Hassan Askour, Secretary-General of AMAC, along with Mr. Fouad Raji and Mr. Rachid El Kaziri, members of AMAC’s board of directors. Also present were representatives from the National Agricultural Advisory Office (Had Kourt Agricultural Advisory Center), the Regional Agricultural Investment Office of Gharb, the Directorate for Agricultural Value Chain Development, and the Takamol team.

A Field Visit to Monitor Progress and Support Agricultural Transitions

This field visit to the Gharb region served as a key opportunity to observe successful experiences in implementing conservation agriculture techniques and to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the rollout of the direct seeding program. The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure a successful transition toward more sustainable and efficient agricultural systems.

The visit included an inspection of several model farms that have adopted conservation agriculture techniques. Participants were able to witness firsthand the positive impact of these practices on soil quality, reduced reliance on chemical inputs, and improved productivity in the face of changing climatic conditions.

Toward a More Sustainable Agricultural Future

Conservation agriculture is one of the key pillars in the development of Morocco’s agricultural sector, given its positive effects on the environment, soil health, and agricultural productivity. The collaboration with the World Bank reflects Morocco’s commitment to adopting modern agricultural policies that address climate change and enhance farmers’ resilience to future challenges.

These joint efforts among stakeholders represent a significant step toward achieving the national objectives of the Green Generation strategy. By expanding direct seeding techniques and providing the necessary support for farmers to adopt more sustainable practices, these initiatives contribute to food security and the long-term preservation of natural resources for future generations.

Notably, such initiatives reinforce Morocco’s position as a regional leader in sustainable agriculture and open new horizons for environmentally responsible agricultural production, fully aligned with the vision of the Green Generation strategy.
