In Cooperation with the National Institute for Agricultural Research, ICARDA Embodies “Research for Development”: A Distinguished Participation in the International Agricultural Exhibition in Morocco
The 17th edition of the International Agricultural Exhibition in Morocco witnessed a remarkable presence of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), in collaboration with the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). The ICARDA pavilion stood out as a key destination for professionals, researchers, and agricultural stakeholders, where science met development and research translated into sustainable solutions.
A Scientific Pavilion Opening New Horizons for Agriculture in Dry Areas...
The ICARDA pavilion was not merely an exhibition space, but a vibrant interactive platform that hosted a series of workshops and scientific meetings addressing highly relevant topics such as climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, and the development of drought-resistant crops. These workshops attracted large audiences and fostered rich discussions, reflecting the growing interest in the role of scientific research in promoting sustainable agriculture.
ALeading Scientific Collaboration Between INRA and ICARDA…
In a global context marked by escalating food security challenges and the intensifying effects of climate change on agricultural systems, the exemplary collaboration between Morocco’s National Institute for Agricultural Research and ICARDA stands out as a cornerstone of applied scientific research in support of sustainable agricultural development in the country.
This strong partnership has laid the foundation for a shared scientific vision rooted in innovation, knowledge transfer, and the development of agricultural solutions tailored to the characteristics of dry and semi-dry regions—an important feature of a large portion of Morocco’s territory. Through this strategic alliance, various pioneering programs and projects are being implemented to address the core challenges faced by Moroccan farmers, particularly in the areas of natural resource management, productivity improvement, valorization of local crop varieties, soil health, and resistance to diseases and climate change.
This collaboration has translated into impactful field research projects that have developed more resilient crop varieties, introduced innovative farming practices, and launched scientific platforms for experience exchange between researchers and professionals. Additionally, high-quality training sessions have been organized for national talents, enhancing the agricultural system’s readiness to face emerging challenges.
The partnership between INRA and ICARDA is more than a technical or scientific collaboration—it is a comprehensive model of solidarity in agricultural innovation, grounded in strategic vision and aspiring to build a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future, in service of farmers, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship.
ICARDA: An International Organization Embodying Research for Development…
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is a global organization dedicated to research for development, focusing on delivering innovative scientific solutions to communities living in non-tropical dry areas. ICARDA works in partnership with research institutions, NGOs, governments, and private sector actors to advance scientific knowledge, promote best practices, and contribute to shaping public policies related to food security and climate adaptation.
Since its founding in 1977, ICARDA has implemented development-oriented research programs in over 50 countries, from Morocco in North Africa to Bangladesh in South Asia, covering a vast range of dry regions worldwide.
A Global Mission with Tangible Results…
ICARDA’s global mission includes improving barley, lentil, and faba bean crops, enhancing water use efficiency in agriculture, addressing rangeland challenges, and boosting small ruminant productivity. The organization also plays a key role in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia in improving the production of wheat (both soft and durum), kabuli chickpeas, forage legumes, and associated farming systems.
Beyond its technical innovation focus, ICARDA places great importance on land management, production system diversification, development of value chains for agricultural and livestock products, and integration of social, economic, and policy research—considered essential tools to ensure effective adoption of technologies and maximize research impact.
Ongoing Commitment to Morocco and the Region…
ICARDA’s participation in the International Agricultural Exhibition in Meknes reflects its strong commitment to supporting Morocco’s efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture, developing climate-resilient crops, and enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers. This participation also highlights the importance of linking scientific research with public policy to ensure food security and build resilience against climate change.
Through this, ICARDA reaffirms that it is more than just a research center—it is a strategic partner in shaping a more equitable and sustainable agricultural future in the world’s dry areas.
