Mauritania-Morocco: Integration in Agriculture & Fisheries, Driver of Sustainable Development “Minister”

Strengthening integration between Morocco and Mauritania in the sectors of agriculture and maritime fisheries significantly contributes to achieving sustainable development goals and reinforcing food security in both countries, stated on Friday in Nouakchott, Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Ahmed El Bouari.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 1st Morocco-Mauritania Economic Parliamentary Forum, El Bouari stressed Morocco’s full readiness to support any initiative aimed at the concrete development of the agriculture, maritime fisheries, and livestock sectors in the shared interest of both nations.

He noted that achieving this objective necessarily requires deepening integration in these sectors, which serve as key levers for attaining sustainability and food sovereignty in both Morocco and Mauritania.

The minister also reaffirmed Morocco’s willingness to identify and remove existing barriers, particularly through the creation of joint commissions tasked with simplifying procedures for the benefit of investors from both countries, highlighting the interest of Moroccan producers in investing in crop and livestock sectors in Mauritania.

In addition, regarding maritime fisheries, El Bouari emphasized that the sector (including aquaculture) holds great promise for enhancing the partnership between the two countries. He recalled, in this regard, the conclusions of the recent Joint Commission held on the sidelines of the Halieutis Fair in Agadir, especially those concerning enhanced cooperation in scientific research, training, aquaculture, maritime safety, and artisanal fishing.

Along these lines, he called for the encouragement of mutual investments in fisheries-related value chains—including processing, value enhancement, and marketing—as well as in aquaculture, by promoting private sector partnerships and facilitating investor access to opportunities available in both countries.
